Year Three,
Specialized Secondary Manufacturing
This course provides the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare
students for entry-level jobs in the secondary wood manufacturing
industry or continuing on in a related postsecondary program.
Students are required to complete a capstone project where they
produce a selected piece of furniture. After receiving a full set of
working drawings, students plan for the manufacturing of the piece,
including the identification of materials, components, joinery
methods, equipment/tooling, and flow chart. The actual creation of
the piece follows including layout, subassemblies, surfaces
preparation, and finishing.
Curriculum for this course is in the form of teacher planning guides
that include the competencies necessary to produce the piece of
furniture. Planning guides are included that will assist the teacher
in developing lesson plans for:
- making daily journal entries
- developing a materials list and
list of components
- identifying joinery methods and
equipment/tooling required
- creating a flow chart
- choosing and using protective
equipment
- dimensioning rough stock
- selecting/laying out material
- cutting stock and producing joints
- completing subassemblies and final
assembly
- preparing surfaces and applying
finish materials
- assessing performance.
Another option, for the more capable
and motivated students, is studying to prepare for college advanced
credit. Self paced, individualized modules have been developed for
use by individuals or small groups of students interested in this
option. For information about these materials
