Year Three, Specialized Primary Manufacturing

Year Three, Specialized Primary ManufacturingThis course provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary for obtaining an entry-level job in the primary wood manufacturing sector or continuing on in a related postsecondary program. Students are required to complete a capstone project where they form a small business to produce a primary wood product for a client. Student groups interview the client to determine the product specifications, do some planning for product production, procure the raw materials needed, and finally prepare the product for delivery.
Curriculum for this course is in the form of teacher planning guides that include the competencies necessary to produce the primary wood product.. Planning guides are included that will assist the teacher in developing lesson plans for:
  • forming a company and business team
  • developing a contract
  • procuring logs
  • sawing the logs and processing the lumber
  • kiln drying lumber
  • performing a cost analysis and determining profit-loss.

Another option, for the more capable and motivated students, is studying to prepare for college advanced credit. Self paced, individualized modules have been developed for use by individuals or small groups of students interested in this option. For information about these materials click here.
