Year One, Forestry/Wood Industry Core

Year One, Forestry/Wood Industry CoreThe Year 1 course of the Foundation Skills Curriculum for the Forest and Wood Industry is a yearlong course concentrated on basic industry skills. The competencies for the first year course were identified using the results of a survey of 748 Pennsylvania wood industries from all segments of the industry. Year 1 competencies provide students with a foundational set of skills upon which to build skills that are more specialized in years two and three.

Curriculum is in the form of teacher planning guides for competencies in the following areas:
  • Safety
  • Hand tools
  • Power tools
  • Wood species characteristics
  • Lumber scaling and grading
  • Tree identification
  • Basic technical skills
  • Workplace skills
  • Applied math
  • Applied communications
  • Applied technology
  • Drafting
  • Manufacturing machines
