This section of the website contains teaching resources for a three-year program in the Foundations Skill Curriculum for the Forest and Wood Industry (Project Overview). The resoures include for each year of the program, a competency list, equipment, materials, and resource list, scope and sequence, project description and rubric (year 3 only), and lists of academic and workplace competencies. Brouse and search features allow users to find teacher planning guides for each competency. Teacher planning guides are documents that assist teachers in developing lesson plans.

Assumptions – The curriculum was written for a 180-day school year with one or two 40-minute periods per day. It was assumed that the instructor had some vocational/technical teaching background, but may have little or no formal training for delivering the competencies identified.

Competencies – The initial competencies identified for this program were developed using the results of an extensive survey of 748 Pennsylvania wood industries from all segments of the industry. Competencies for the forest industry part of the curriculum were revalidated in 2006 by industry representatives belonging to the National Hardwood Lumber Association from across the United States.

Scope and Sequence – A suggested scope and sequence has been provided for each year of the program however as long as prerequisites are met and the weather allows competencies can be taught in any order.

Integrated Instruction – It is suggested that the competencies in this curriculum are taught with the cooperation and involvement of academic teachers. To assist in this effort, the academic skills required for students to master the competencies are identified in the “Prerequisite Skills” section of each planning guide. These academic skills are national standards identified by the National Center of Education and the Economy and the University of Pittsburgh.
